Easter Mass from the University of Notre Dame

Aired 2009-10. Presented by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops With a trumpet blast and an “Alleluia!” Christ’s resurrection were proclaimed from the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame.  Holy Cross fathers Richard Warner, director of campus ministry and Rev. Peter Rocco, shrine rector, co-celebrated the Easter Mass together with the fifty-member choir and congregation.  Students proclaimed the Easter readings and participated in the renewal of their baptismal rites. It is this joyful and youthful celebration that so clearly embodies Easter.  As Christ’s resurrection brings us spiritual rebirth so do these many faith-filled young men and women, and energized us with their embodiment of God’s light.

 

Interrupted Lives: Catholic Sisters Under European Communism

But then communism seized control of their countries, forcing them to work for the state. Interrupted Lives explores the experiences of Greek and Roman Catholic Sisters during the 40-year Soviet domination of Eastern and Central Europe. From the end of World War II to the fall of the Berlin Wall, these “Sisters Survivors” endured imprisonment, exile to Siberia, forced farm and factory labor, deportation, seizure of their schools and hospitals and underground survival. Interviews offer a powerful testimony of faith, courage and endurance.

Long Road Back: Ex-offenders Struggle for Acceptance

Aired 2009-10. Presented by the National Council of Churches USA, produced by Mennonite Media With the highest incarceration rate in the world, the United States holds over two million souls in its prisons each year. More than half a million ex-offenders are released back into society annually. When released, many are given only $25.00 and a one way bus ticket. Often released with an addiction and no place to call home, these people struggle to find a way through the protective net society has cast around itself to ward off such people. In this program, we experienced their stories of struggle, and occasionally, victory.

Poverty: A Time for Sharing

Aired 2009-10. Faith groups take seriously their role in overcoming the harsh effects of poverty on the lives of so many. This special touched on various programs to help the poor and highlighted one effort by faith groups and sports teams (among others) which provided $10 malaria tents, made of simple netting, to protect more than one million malaria victims, most of them children, each year.

Ready to Forgive: An African Story of Grace

Presented by the National Council of Churches USA; Produced by the Evangelical LutheranChurch in America Even though the Acholi people of Northern Uganda have been living in a war zone over the past 20 years, they can teach the rest of the world a lesson about forgiveness.  More than 300,000 people were packed into camps for safety during some of those years. Despite all this, the Acholi people are ready to forgive the rebels who caused them so much pain.  They have a tradition known asMato Oput or "drinking the bitter herbs." When two parties come together and taste the bitter herb, they sense each others pain. Then, the broken relationship is restored. Join us for an hour-long trip into faith, forgiveness and reconciliation, an African story of grace, hosted by Rwandan genocide survivor, Immaculee Ilibagiza.

Caring for God's Creation

Choosing to Forgive

Aired 2008-09. As a matter of deep religious conviction, the forgiving of others - for injustices, large or small, or acts of prejudice or violence – is deemed central to a healthy spiritual life. It is also important for good mental health. We heard from people who have offered forgiveness and others who have received it, and learned of the powerful affect it has on those who offer it, and those who receive it.

Christian Unity

Aired 2008-09. Over many centuries, differences in regional in cultural traditions, and some geographic politics caused a troubling separation within of the Christian Community. The 100thAnniversary of the modern Ecumenical Movement was also the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. This broadcast explored the progress being made to heal these divides and examine how denominations are joining to give respectful witness to what binds them in a common faith.

Christmas Eve from the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assissi

Aired 2008-09. Presented by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Msgr. Harry Schlitt hosts this hour long program from the Shrine's newly dedicated Porziuncola Chapel, a replica of a small church rebult by St. Francis of Assisi. From this intimate place of prayer and reflection, viewers learn about another of Francis' recreations, the creche, one of the most recognized symbols of Christmas. Viewers will be treated to the season classic, "The First Christmas." Hymns will round out the program as the birth of the Prince of Peace is celebrated at this Shrine that honors a man of peace.

Connecting Threads

Aired 2008-09. Presented by the National Council of Churches USA; produced by the United Church of Christ We took a virtual trip around the world and experienced the sights, sounds, challenges and faith-filled hope that emerge everyday. Connecting Threads gave an overview of how threads of sharing and service connect when members of US churches (in this case the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ) work together with global partners. Words and music told their stories of faith in five regions: Africa, Europe and the Middle East, Southern Asia, East Asia and the Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean. Mission personnel and global partners from around the world discussed the role the church plays in health and wellness, leadership development, economic support, education, and issues related to access to natural resources.
